What is Pay-As-You-Go?
PAYG technology eliminates the upfront cost barrier associated with Solar Home Systems (SHS), enabling users to make affordable payments over time. This is made possible through the incorporation of additional electronics that can activate or deactivate the SHS upon request, creating a top-up payment structure similar to mobile phones.
To implement a PAYG system, it is essential to integrate a locking/unlocking functionality into the hardware of the system. All Cloud Energy Solar Home Systems come equipped with the PAYG functionality.
Furthermore, a PAYG software backend is necessary to monitor customer payments and provide Customer Relationship Management (CRM) capabilities. These services are typically offered by PAYG service providers, and depending on the chosen provider, the backend may also include features like warehousing and service management, among others.
Benefits of PAYGO
Security
Customers make payments using a token acquired via mobile money or from a specified local vendor, allowing them to pay on a weekly or monthly schedule. If the customer discontinues payments, the system will automatically deactivate.
Cost-effectiveness
Customers have the flexibility to make payments from their savings or current income, thanks to adaptable repayment conditions. This option enables them to shift their expenditure from kerosene, candles, or batteries to an entry-level solar home system.
Post-purchase Support
With PAYGO, customers will only be charged if the system functions properly, ensuring excellent after-sales service and long-term success for rural electrification projects.
Open PAYGO
The PAYG market is experiencing robust growth, allowing millions of people to benefit from vital energy services. Presently, when considering the implementation of PAYGO systems for a project, the selection of a PAYG provider and the installation of corresponding software must take place during the manufacturing of the products in the battery box. Unfortunately, this setup does not permit a later switch of the PAYG service provider, resulting in locked-in ecosystems.
In response to this situation, The EnAccess Foundation, in collaboration with Solaris Offgrid, has developed an open-source interface. This interface facilitates the seamless integration of various PAYG service and hardware combinations, offering greater flexibility and enabling users to adopt different PAYG solutions without constraints.
OpenPAYGO Token
Open source technology plays a crucial role in the solar industry, as it establishes standards to promote the global adoption of PAYGO products by providing a shared interface. With the OpenPAYGO Token, PAYGO products communicate through a common protocol, rendering the need for specific integrations obsolete and allowing for seamless switching of PAYGO software providers, even during field operations.
The development of the OpenPAYGO Token aims to simplify matters for customers, as it allows for effortless integration of any PAYGO software at no cost.
How does it work?
Presently, an open source communication interface has been established to facilitate seamless interaction between hardware and software. The unlocking Tokens are generated using cryptographic principles and are associated with unique security keys specific to each system. This approach ensures a robust level of security, effectively preventing fraud.
With the Open PAYGO Token, customers have the flexibility to switch PAYG providers even after the systems have been deployed in the field. Additionally, it is feasible to transition PAYG systems to non-PAYG configurations, and vice versa, by simply entering a designated token on the integrated Keypad found on the battery.
